We often believe that retirement will be a time of great joy, fulfillment, relaxation and fun. Often it is, but sometimes it is most definitly not. Older adults may face problems such as chronic pain and illness, isolation, and financial concerns. Sometimes communication with their adult children, care givers or other persons can be challenging. If you are working with an older adult, please take time to make sure you understand what they are saying from their perspective. Often what we want for our loved one, friend or client is not what they want for themselves. It is important to respect their autonomy as much as possible, working together toward solutions that they prefer.
